Don Peris, Go When the Morning Shineth

Fans of The Innocence Mission: check out Don Peris’ new, mostly-instrumental record, Go When the Morning Shineth, released today. The album fits comfortably in the Peris repertoire but allows for deeper exploration of the band’s common themes and melodic phrasing. There’s a sense of classicism on Go When the Morning Shineth that makes the album much richer and more interesting than a wordless Innocence Mission record. It’s hardly lackluster because of Karen’s absence, and the extra room gives Don’s typically-verby guitars the chance to speak more boldly. Don successfully blends the album’s sweeping orchestral arrangements with acoustic guitars, electrics and distant, brushy drum kits into a reflective collection of songs good for reading, sleeping, eating, romancing, porch-sitting and praying. Simply a beautiful record that’s both ambitious and down-to-earth.
